Two quotes land in the same week. One says £2,400 to build your website. The other says £74 a month. They look like completely different propositions, and they are, but not for the reason most people assume. The gap is not really about money. It is about what happens in month seven.

What an upfront quote usually leaves out
The number at the bottom of a build quote is for designing and building the site. That is usually all it is for. The things that arrive afterwards are where people feel misled, even when nobody set out to mislead them.
- Hosting, somewhere between £60 and £300 a year depending on what you are sold.
- The domain renewal, small but easy to forget until the site goes dark.
- An SSL certificate, sometimes included and sometimes an annual line item.
- A business email address, which is separate from the website more often than people expect.
- Security patching and plugin updates, which are either billed or quietly not done.
- Changes. This is the big one. Hourly rates for a new price list or a change of opening hours add up quickly.
None of that makes an upfront build a bad deal. It makes the headline figure an incomplete one, and the honest way to compare is to add a realistic year of running costs to it before you put it next to a monthly price.
The case for paying once
Pay once and after the invoice clears the site costs you very little to keep online. If you have the capital spare, if the site is unlikely to change much, and if you have someone who will keep it patched, this is the cheaper route over five years and we will say so. Without a redesign they are within a hundred pounds of each other, which surprises most people. With one, the monthly plan comes out ahead. The real difference is not the total, it is that one of those columns required you to remember things and the other did not.
How to decide in two minutes
Answer these honestly. Do you have the money spare right now without it hurting? Is there someone who will keep the site updated in eighteen months? Will the site stay broadly the same for three years?
Three yeses and you should buy it outright. Any no and a monthly plan will probably serve you better, because the thing that kills most small business websites is not the build cost. It is that nobody touches them again.
