Why Cardiff Businesses Are Ditching Big Upfront Website Costs
Website quotes in Cardiff often start at £2,000. Here is why, why most small firms cannot find that upfront, and what paying monthly changes.
Most Cardiff business owners I speak to are not asking whether they need a website. They know they do. What stops them is the quote. Somewhere between £2,000 and £6,000, due before a single customer has seen the thing, usually with hosting and updates billed on top.
I have built websites from Cardiff since 2012, and over that time the conversation has changed. Fewer people ask “how much to build it?” and more ask “what will it cost me each month?” This article explains why. It covers what web design really costs in 2026, why designers charge what they do, why a big upfront bill is so hard for small firms to find, and where paying monthly fits. I will also be honest about when it does not.
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| What does a small business website cost upfront? | Around £800 to £1,500 from a Cardiff freelancer, and £2,000 to £6,000 from a regional agency, based on 2026 UK price guides. |
| Why is it that much? | A proper site takes days of skilled work across planning, design, writing, building and testing, plus the agency's overheads. |
| What does it cost to keep it running? | Typically £100 to £300 a month once hosting, maintenance, email and security are added. |
| Why are firms switching to monthly? | Cash flow. Most small businesses would rather keep a few thousand pounds in the bank than tie it up in a website. |
| What does Forte charge? | From £74 a month, with hosting, domain, SSL, security and update time included and no fixed-term contract. |
What a website actually costs in Cardiff in 2026
Prices vary a lot, which is part of the problem. Two quotes for what sounds like the same five page website can be thousands of pounds apart. Here are the typical ranges from current UK pricing guides, plus what a pay monthly plan looks like next to them.
| Option | Typical upfront cost | What you still pay for |
|---|---|---|
| DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace) | £0 to £350 | Monthly subscription, your own time, your own copy and photos |
| Cardiff freelancer | £800 to £1,500 for a small business site | Hosting, domain, email, changes at £30 to £60 an hour |
| Regional agency | £2,000 to £6,000 | Hosting and maintenance, often £100 to £300 a month in total |
| London or premium agency | £5,000 to £15,000 and up | As above, usually at a higher rate |
| Forte pay monthly | Nothing big upfront | One monthly price from £74 that covers the build and the running |
The freelancer figures come from a Cardiff-specific pricing guide. The agency figures come from UK guides published this year. None of it is a secret, but it is rarely laid out in one place before someone has already sat through a sales call.
Why web designers charge what they do
It is easy to look at a £3,000 quote and assume someone is taking the mickey. Usually they are not. A small business website that actually brings in work involves more than people expect, and most of it happens before a single page is built.
- Working out what the site is for. Who it is aimed at, what you want them to do, which services and areas matter most.
- Writing the words. UK guides price professional copywriting at £200 to £500 a page. Plenty of quotes leave this to you.
- Design and build. Laying out every page so it works on a phone first, then building it properly.
- The technical basics. Page speed, security, schema, analytics, contact forms that actually reach your inbox.
- Revisions and testing. Rounds of changes, checking every link and form, then launch.
Add it up and a well made five page site is several days of skilled work, in my experience often more than a week once the back and forth is counted. At Cardiff hourly rates of £30 to £60, the maths gets to four figures quickly.
Then there are the costs you never see. An agency with an office in the city centre or down the Bay has rent, staff, software licences, insurance and sales time to cover. And because a one-off project is the only money they will see from you, the risk gets priced in too. If the job runs over, the quote has to absorb it.
Worth knowing
A high quote is not always a rip-off, and a low one is not always a bargain. What matters is what is included, what costs extra later, and who looks after the site once it is live. One 2026 UK guide estimates that advertised prices are often only 25 to 40 percent of what people end up spending.
Why a big upfront bill is so hard for small firms to find
Most businesses in Cardiff are small. Across Wales, 94.6 percent of the 246,500 active businesses are micro firms with fewer than ten staff, according to the Welsh Government's 2025 size analysis. These are sole traders, family firms, salons, cafés, trades with one or two vans. They do not have a marketing budget sitting in a separate account.
Cash is tight, and the numbers back that up:
- 28 percent of UK small firms have two months or less of cash in reserve, from iwoca's April 2026 survey of 1,005 owners.
- 60 percent have more money going out than coming in for at least half the year, in the same survey.
- The average small business is owed around £22,000 in unpaid invoices at any one time.
- 45 percent saw late payments get worse in the year to March 2025, and 28 percent had to use short-term finance to cover the gap, according to research from GoCardless and the FSB.
So when a builder in Llanishen or a beauty therapist in Canton is asked for £3,000 upfront, the real question is not “is the website worth it?” It is “what else does that money have to cover this month?” A van repair. VAT. Stock for the busy season. A customer who has not paid for six weeks.
And paying upfront does not end the spending. Once the site is live, hosting, domain renewals, email, security and changes start arriving as separate bills. UK guides put the running cost of a professionally built small business site at £100 to £300 a month. Many people only find this out after they have paid for the build.
What paying monthly changes
A pay monthly website spreads the cost of the build and bundles in the running of it. You pay one amount each month, and the designer stays responsible for keeping the site working. That shifts a few things in your favour.
- Your cash stays in the business. There is no large bill before you have had a single enquiry.
- The cost is predictable. Hosting, SSL, security, backups and a set amount of update time are in the price, so there are no surprise invoices through the year.
- Someone keeps looking after it. The designer has a reason to keep the site fast, secure and working, because you can leave if they do not.
- It grows with you. Start small, then move up to a plan with more pages, Google Business Profile management or booking tools when you need them.
Here is a rough three year comparison using the lower end of the ranges above. It is an illustration, not a quote, and your own numbers will differ.
| Over three years | Regional agency, paid upfront | Forte Starter, paid monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Build | £2,000 on day one | £0 upfront |
| Hosting, maintenance and updates | £50 a month, so £1,800 | Included |
| Total after 36 months | £3,800 | £2,664 (36 × £74) |
| Cash needed in month one | £2,050 | £74 |
To be fair to the other side: pay monthly is not always cheaper over a long time. If you can afford the build, are happy to manage hosting and updates yourself, and plan to leave the site alone for five years or more, paying once can work out cheaper. I have written a straight comparison of both in pay monthly vs upfront web design.
Why pay monthly suits small and medium sized businesses
Large companies have in-house teams and budgets planned a year ahead. Most small and medium businesses in Cardiff have neither. What they need is a website that works, a bill they can plan for, and someone to ring when something needs changing.
That is who our plans are built around. A sole trader might start on Starter at £74 a month, with up to five pages and 30 minutes of updates each month. A growing firm with a team and several services might sit on Professional at £249, which adds up to ten pages, Google Business Profile management, on-page SEO and one or two blog posts a month. Businesses that want one team handling everything can use Business at £649. Every plan is on our web design prices page in full.
There is no fixed-term contract on any plan, and no exit fee. If you leave, we hand over your website files and transfer your domain to you. That last part matters, and it is worth asking any provider about. Our guide to what you actually own on a pay monthly website covers it properly.
How we keep the price low without cutting corners
People sometimes assume a low monthly price means a template with your logo dropped in. It does not have to. The price is lower for a few plain reasons.
- We are a small team based in Cardiff, without a city centre office or sales staff to pay for.
- The cost of the build is spread over the time you stay with us, so we do not need to recover it all on day one.
- Hosting, SSL and security are set up the same way for every client, which keeps running costs down for us and for you.
- We look after every site ourselves, so small changes take minutes rather than turning into new projects.
Most sites go live within 7 to 14 days of us receiving your content. If you are in the city, our pay monthly websites in Cardiff page has more on how it works locally.
Communication: the part most web designers get wrong
Ask small business owners what annoyed them about their last web designer and price is rarely top of the list. It is usually the silence. Emails that go unanswered for a week. A simple change that takes a month. A designer who vanished once the invoice was paid.
This is where pay monthly helps both sides. Because we are paid each month, staying in touch is the job, not a favour. Here is what that looks like in practice:
- You deal with Robert and the small Forte team directly. No call centre, no ticket queue, no chatbot standing between you and an answer.
- We reply to every enquiry and request within one working day.
- Update time is built into every plan, so you can email a new photo or a price change without waiting for a quote.
- We explain things in plain English, and we tell you what something costs before we do it.
- Because we are in Cardiff, we can meet if you would rather sit down and talk it through. Most clients are happy on the phone.
What to ask any Cardiff web designer before you pay
Whoever you choose, these questions will save you money and a few headaches.
- 1What exactly is included in the price, and what will I be billed for later?
- 2Who writes the words on the website, and is that included?
- 3What do hosting, domain, email and security cost each year after launch?
- 4How much does a small change cost, and how quickly will it be done?
- 5If I leave, do I get my website files and my domain?
- 6Is there a minimum contract or an exit fee?
- 7How quickly do you reply, and who will I actually be talking to?
If a quote cannot answer those clearly, keep looking. If you want our answers to all seven, they are on one page and we are happy to go through them on a call.

Why are web designers so expensive?+
