Google Street View UK Goes Live

Google launched street view for the UK on Thursday March 19th showing detailed street level images from 25 of Britain’s cities. The following cities have been closely photographed-

  • Aberdeen
  • Belfast
  • Birmingham
  • Bradford
  • Bristol
  • Cambridge
  • Cardiff
  • Coventry
  • Derby
  • Dundee
  • Edinburgh
  • Glasgow
  • Leeds
  • Liverpool
  • London
  • Oxford
  • Manchester
  • Newcastle
  • Norwich
  • Nottingham
  • Scunthorpe
  • Sheffield
  • Southampton
  • Swansea
  • York

This image of Cardiff Castle shows just how much detail that has been captured by Google’s menacing looking Black Opels driving along our streets. The worrying thing about this is peoples privacy. Google has assured everyone that their software will automatically blur peoples faces but this unfortunately simply is not true.

Out of curiosity I was having a ‘drive’ around my local suburb of Cardiff only to discover that many people’s faces have not been hidden as promised. Worse still there is a mother walking down one street with two kids, one of which can be identified. Now I don’t mind if I could be identified if I was snapped walking down the street but children? Come on Google sort it out.
